Anxiety and Job Insecurity: When Career Uncertainty Keeps You Up at Night

by Jarrette Wright-Booker MA, LPC-S, CAADC

When Your Job Feels Unstable, So Does Everything Else

Job insecurity hits different when you’re used to being the one who has it all together. You’re checking every box—working long hours, showing up early, staying late, doing your best to stand out in spaces that weren’t always designed with you in mind. And yet, the whispers of layoffs, organizational restructuring, or your contract not being renewed still creep in. Suddenly, that steady income feels fragile, and your peace of mind? Out the window.

For many Black professionals in Detroit and surrounding areas like Southfield and Farmington Hills, job insecurity is more than just a career hiccup—it can activate deep anxiety rooted in survival, pressure to succeed, and the fear of being seen as “disposable” in workplaces where you’re already working twice as hard to be noticed.

How Job Insecurity Triggers Anxiety

When your income feels shaky, it’s not just bills you’re worried about—it’s your identity, safety, and future stability. Anxiety shows up in subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways, including:

  • Constant “what if” thinking about getting let go
  • Overworking to prove your value
  • Trouble sleeping or relaxing, even on your off days
  • Physical symptoms like chest tightness, irritability, or fatigue
  • Feeling stuck between wanting to leave and fearing you can’t afford to

And let’s not forget the internal tug-of-war—should you stay for the check or start over somewhere new? That limbo can be paralyzing.

You’re Not Lazy. You’re Operating in Survival Mode

If you’ve been blaming yourself for not being as productive or motivated lately, pause. Job-related anxiety can be emotionally exhausting. You’re not lazy. You’re managing fear, uncertainty, and the pressure to “stay ready” just in case things fall apart.

For high-achieving Black women and men, especially those who are used to holding it all together, job insecurity can trigger deeper wounds—feeling unseen, undervalued, or one step away from collapse. And when you’ve been socialized to hustle through discomfort, asking for help might feel like a luxury. But it’s not. It’s necessary.

5 Ways to Cope When Job Anxiety Takes Over

If your brain won’t shut off and your shoulders live somewhere near your ears, try these strategies:

1. Name it.
This is anxiety. Not weakness. Not failure. Just your body’s alarm system responding to real-life uncertainty.

2. Stop overworking to prove your worth.
More hours won’t guarantee job security. Instead, set boundaries and focus on what’s within your control.

3. Reconnect with yourself outside of work.
Your job is what you do, not who you are. Tap back into your creativity, rest, joy, or even boredom. It matters.

4. Take small financial steps.
Build a cushion—even if it’s just $25 at a time. It’s not about the amount—it’s about feeling more empowered.

5. Get culturally affirming support.
Therapy can help you unpack what you’re carrying, validate your experience, and build coping skills without judgment. You deserve a space where you don’t have to explain “why it’s harder” for you—it’s understood.

You Deserve More Than Career Survival—You Deserve Peace

If job insecurity has you spiraling, it’s okay to pause. You don’t have to hustle your way through anxiety. At Introspective Counseling, our compassionate therapists and culturally aware counselors are here to help you manage your stress, reclaim your calm, and feel grounded again—even in uncertain times.

Job insecurity can make even the most grounded person feel untethered. It shakes more than your paycheck—it shakes your sense of safety, value, and control. But even in the middle of all that uncertainty, it’s possible to find steadiness. Sometimes that starts with taking a breath, giving yourself permission to name what you’re feeling, and remembering that you’re not meant to carry it all alone. Therapy for anxiety can be a powerful space to unpack the weight you’ve been holding, reconnect with your inner calm, and remind yourself that you’re more than your job title. Peace isn’t something you have to earn by being strong—it’s something you deserve simply because you’re human.
