Many Black women seek therapy for anxiety or depression. They try coping skills. They work hard. Still, something feels off.
The exhaustion does not improve. The overwhelm continues. Feeling misunderstood becomes normal.
In many cases, the issue is not effort or motivation. Autism was never considered.
Why Anxiety and Depression Are Often Diagnosed First
Anxiety and depression are common. They are also familiar to most clinicians. Because of this, they are often diagnosed quickly.
However, autism in adults is less understood. This is especially true for Black women.
For example, when a Black woman is:
- Successful at work
- Emotionally aware
- Verbally expressive
- Highly responsible
Autism is often ruled out.
As a result, lived experiences are misunderstood. Sensory overwhelm is called anxiety. Burnout is called depression. Masking is called coping.
How Autism Can Look Like Anxiety or Depression
Autism in adults often shows up internally. It does not always look obvious.
Because of this, many Black women adapt early. They overperform. They people-please. They self-monitor.
Over time, this becomes exhausting.
Common experiences include:
- Feeling overwhelmed easily
- Needing more recovery time after social interaction
- Struggling with transitions
- Shutting down when stressed
- Feeling stuck when making decisions
Eventually, anxiety or depression can develop. However, these symptoms are often the result, not the cause.
How Intersectionality Impacts Diagnosis
Autism research has focused mostly on white boys. Because of this, many clinicians rely on outdated ideas.
At the same time, Black women are often expected to be strong. They are expected to adapt. They are expected to manage stress quietly.
Because of these expectations, autistic traits are often dismissed. They may be labeled as personality, trauma, or stress.
As a result, autism is rarely explored.
When Treatment Does Not Fully Work
When therapy helps only a little, many Black women blame themselves.
They may think:
- “I am doing something wrong.”
- “I should be able to handle this.”
However, therapy that does not consider autism can miss key needs. These needs may include sensory support, structure, and reduced masking.
Without these supports, progress often stalls.
What Changes When Autism Is Considered
When autism is considered, many women feel relief.
Suddenly:
- Burnout makes sense
- Exhaustion has context
- Sensitivity feels valid
- Shame begins to lift
This does not erase anxiety or depression. However, it often changes how care is approached.
You Are Not Failing
If anxiety or depression treatment has not helped enough, it may be time to ask a different question.
Instead of asking, “What is wrong with me?”
Try asking, “What has not been considered?”
Autism in Black women has been overlooked for too long. That matters.
