Productive, Panicked, and Pushing Through: The Anxiety Cycle Nobody Talks About

by Jarrette Wright-Booker MA, LPC-S, CAADC

You wake up already behind. You answer emails during lunch. You’re mentally drafting tomorrow’s to-do list while pretending to watch TV. On the surface, you look productive. But underneath? You’re drowning in anxiety.

This is the part of anxiety that no one talks about—the version that hides behind busyness and looks like ambition, but feels like a quiet panic. At Introspective Counseling in Detroit, we often see high-functioning clients stuck in a loop of constant doing. They don’t realize what they’re experiencing is actually chronic anxiety—not just burnout, not just stress, but a cycle that’s become their baseline.

What Is the Anxiety Cycle?

The anxiety cycle is a sneaky pattern where anxiety drives you to overperform. It typically follows this loop:

  1. You feel anxious—about falling behind, being judged, or not doing enough.
  2. That anxiety pushes you to be more productive, more perfect, more in control.
  3. You finish tasks, which gives a quick sense of relief.
  4. But that relief fades fast, and the anxiety comes roaring back.
  5. So, you keep pushing through—again and again.

At first, it feels like you’re managing life. But over time, you’re just managing your anxiety, not your responsibilities.

The Many Faces of Anxiety

Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic attacks or nervous pacing. Sometimes anxiety looks like:

  • Saying yes to everything, even when you’re overwhelmed
  • Triple-checking your emails or work
  • Struggling to rest because “there’s always more to do”
  • Feeling guilty when you take a break
  • Overthinking every interaction, decision, or task

If you’re constantly pushing, performing, and pretending you’re fine—anxiety might be running the show.

Why Anxiety Often Goes Unnoticed in High Achievers

In a world that rewards productivity, anxiety can masquerade as dedication. Many of our clients—especially Black professionals—have internalized the belief that rest must be earned and excellence is the only acceptable standard. But what happens when excellence is driven by fear, not fulfillment?

The cultural pressure to be strong, capable, and unbothered often leads to ignored anxiety, emotional suppression, and exhaustion. And because anxiety is so deeply woven into daily life, many don’t recognize how much it’s costing them—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

How Anxiety Impacts the Body and Mind

Living with ongoing anxiety takes a toll. Even if you’re still “functioning,” you might notice:

  • Difficulty sleeping, even when you’re exhausted
  • Increased irritability and snapping at loved ones
  • Constant muscle tension or stomach issues
  • Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
  • Never truly feeling “done” with anything

These are not just signs of burnout—they’re signs of chronic anxiety that needs care, not more caffeine and to-do lists.

You Can Break the Cycle

Here’s what helps interrupt the anxiety cycle:

  • Acknowledge your anxiety instead of powering through it
  • Challenge the belief that your worth is tied to productivity
  • Practice rest as a right, not a reward
  • Name what you’re feeling—fear, overwhelm, shame—so you can begin to heal
  • Connect with a therapist who understands the cultural and emotional layers behind your anxiety
